press release and more information
Instrumental rock is quite a phenomenon in modern music. A style with glorious traditions and a long history unfairly consigned to oblivion and revived in the mid nineties. That was the time when it shaped into an independent music movement which now has several stylistic branches (instrumental prog, experimental/avant-rock, space-rock, improvisational rock, etc.)It owes its rebirth to such famous musicians as Terry Bozzio (Lonely Bears), Bill Brufford (Earthworks), Robert Fripp (King Crimson), Fred Frith (Aksak Maboul, Massacre), Bill Laswell (Arcana, Automaton, Material, Sacred System), Tony Levin (Liquid Tension Experiment) and many other representatives of various schools.
They created the new music.
It combined the most interesting trends of improvisational music and jazz of the fourteens and the fifties, American guitar music of the fifties and the sixties, European prog-rock of the seventies, experimental electronics of the eighties and traditional music of different countries. New wave of instrumental rock – Djam Karet, Ozric Tentacles and other like-minded musicians profoundly influence contemporary music culture as well as set aesthetical standards of composition, sound and performance.
The movement is not widely represented in Russia but the few groups continuously attract attention of the connoisseurs and, probably, constitute the base of Russian progressive music scene.
SUMMER PROGRESSION is an insight into three interpretations of
instrumental music:
DISEN GAGE (instrumental rock / indie-prog)
One of the best-known abroad Russian guitar instrumental bands, popular in prog as well as in post-rock circles. An eclectic mixture of indie, folk and psychodelic in a brief pseudo-song format, spontaneity of delivery and crazy dynamics of performance.
KOSTAREV GROUP (sympho-avant-prog / art-fusion)
Acknowledged leaders of the style in its classic interpretation. Epic, complex compositions, elaborate and lush arrangements, abrupt theme turns, masterly solos and improvisations – the phantasmagoric show of guitarist Alexander Kostarev and his partners only reveals its meaning to a tuned and interested listener.
INVISIBLE FRONT (progressive rock / space-psychedelic)
Young promising representatives of Russian prog-instrumental scene. Cold austerity, “detached” manipulations with ambient-massives, trans-psychodelic immersion interrupted by a sudden guitar attack. Invisible Front is a squeezed spring. When released it emits an energy that literally blows up the club space.
